Trolls - A Worthy Objective

 Every army needs an objective right?  I had found this alluring mini and thought "this would make a nice light snack for my trolls!"  Armed with cork, foam, a cd and some basing materials, I put together "lunch".

 The backstory goes something like this; the trolls take the fairest (and therefore tastiest) woman in the nearest village and tie her to a stick.  Her clothes are removed to reveal choice cuts, which makes the hungry trolls agitated.  The troll who survives and kills the most of the enemy is rewarded with roasted maiden after the battle.  The rest of the trolls get to pick over the battlefield for other morsels of food and any lost limbs or whelps.

 I guess it gives an opposing (human) force reason to save her, or other factions to get the snack first.  Either way, it is fun to place it on any table and watch my opponent's reaction.

 The carvings on the stone roughly translate into "food, here."

Hordes of Chaos - Release the Hounds

 It seems that chaos is in ascendant, the glorious host of the magical bird god has nearly doubled in size with the arrival of two batches of previously owned chaos mortals.  With these new additions most of my cults (regiments) can be increased to their holy numbers and some new subservient cults will arise.  My host, previously of a very monotheist nature, will soon include devotees of Khorne and Nurgle.  (The cult of the Fly Lord has already begun, see earlier posts.)

 To start this new glorious age of chaos, I started with the new hounds.  The Pack started with a bunch of kroot hounds, due to their beaky nature, with some added tails and fur.  For some reason I only modified half of them, but painted them all, it was a long time ago after all.  Recently added to their numbers was a batch of new plastic hounds, which I mixed in.

 The alfa hounds are some old non-GW sculpts, like Reaper's cerebus (the three-headed puppy), but I don't know where the other two are from.  They work well as unit leaders since they are notably different.  As the cults grow to their full size, the older members will get updated.  This includes battle damage (like broken horns and such), I am not going to replace anything but paint in their wounds, thus the occasional missing horn.

Warp Wednesday Twelve: The Tools of Change

Happy Warpday, today I would like to talk about tools. First off, the "Big Clippy-Grabby Things". Clippers, for clipping. Pliers for grabbing. And the multi-tool mostly for its big file, sawblade and bottle opener.

Ahh, wires. Paperclips (regular sized) get used for pinning things together, sometimes I will have a couple large ones lying around (not right now it seems). Flower wire (the green spool) is awesome for using as wires, it is covered with a plastic coating so it glues really well. Guitar wire comes in handy all over the place these days, these ones are the wrapped copper kind, the not-wrapped strings I will use in the near futer to make razor wire.

The Brushes, (also known as "The Nosehair Mafia"). From left to right; Big (craft), Flat (craft), Standard (GW), Small (GW), Detail (GW cut down), Stipple (GW cut down lots), Big Dry (GW ruined). The bracket thing is about where they came from...they are an odd bunch. Usually, a standard brush (from GW) will get worn down until it becomes a Small, the Small becomes the Detail, and a new Standard is found. One such Standard became Stipple as a result of a scissor accident.

Cutting stuff consists of the exacto-blade and its friends. The pin vice has been the most useful purchase I have ever made in the hobby. (It is the stability of models and drilled out barrels that does it for me!) And never least, the Sacred Half-Round, for all my fine filing needs.

These are the sculpting tools I use. The pen makes perfect circular holes, while the pencil (with its hollow tip) stamps out dials and pustules really well. Pick and Sculptey (center) are used for almost all other putty uses, and my finger.

Lastly to be viewed is the sculpting box (Sculpty and his friends do not live here). I keep my putty in a container, and that container is kept under the toolkit (away from sun, heat and rabbits) to keep it (and rabbits) safe. Included with the two types of putty are the molds I use (olive oil makes great release) and a ziplock bag. I know what you are thinking, green stuff and a ziplock bag....together they make great coats and other smooth areas free of fingerprints!

Not pictured are the Hot Tools (which are kept in an Immolator box), the hot wire cutter and hot glue gun. These are usually banished to a shelf unless I make terrain...

Here Comes the Mushroom Man...

This is a giftmini for Samalander. She has named him Kamasipress (the word from Cabin 12). The challenge for me was how to make a brightly colored "unugly" nurgle daemon prince. If you have seen her army (and I suggest you do) you will notice the vivid color, claws and unorthodox model use.

Given Sam's attraction to mushrooms, when I saw the original model I knew I had to paint it for her. This was just before she started collecting, and when she decided on daemons, he got the title of daemon prince.

The original model is the Mushroom King from Reaper Miniatures, although a nice model on it's own, he needed more. Adding wood elf dryad bitz and extending the cap with green stuff was on the menu.

The purple hue in the skin is there to tie him in with the deamonettes (and stuff) but I kept it paler than them for a nurgly appearance. In the tradition of sacred mushrooms, he got a white spotted red cap.

He sat half done for a while, then last week he collected the "minimum dust requirement" and I finished him. Now he just needs some powers and he will be a magical mushroom.
